"the strategy paid off"

岡島選手はメジャーの厳しい日程で後半少し疲れを見せて心配されていました。一つ目にとまったのは、なぜfatigued という言葉を使ったのか？なぜ、tiredじゃなかったかということでした。fatiguedをオンライン辞書でみると'extremely tired'と定義され、=exhaustedとなっていました。tiredとexhaustedの違いは比較的わかりやすいですね。念のため辞書（Longman Activator)でみると exhausted=extremely tired ,especially after a long period of hard work, exercise, walking or running etc has used up all your energyとなっています。used up all your energyの部分が意味を決定づけていますね。さて、fatigued。これは、形容詞としてのエントリーはなく、名詞 fatigueだけ掲載されていて、'a word used especially in medical contexts, meaning a state of extreme tiredness or weakness'とあります。例文として、"Long hours spent in front of a computer screen causes fatigue of the eye muscles."があります。岡島選手の場合も、疲労の度合いはチームドクターあたりが判断して、戦略的に休ませた、というニュアンスがあるので、fatigueを使ったのかもしれません。それが、文末の the strategy paid offにつながっているのでしょう。pay off というのは、この場合、My perseverance is paying off. / Your studies have paid off.のように使って「報われた」 という意味で使われるようですが、strategyとcollocateさせているところがおもしろかったので紹介しました。
