Reading（読解）について考える

ある英語関係のメルマガで次のような問題が紹介されていた。英語がnative speakerの小学校２年生の国語の問題らしい。

Dear Grandpa,
We're having a great camping trip. Dad put our tent undera big tree, and we can hear the water flowing over the rocksin a nearby stream.Yesterday Mom and I cooked some hot dogs.Today we went on a hike. I wanted to pick a flower,but Mom said it was better to leave the plant alone becauseall flowers want to grow!

For what purpose was this letter written?

○To warn not to pick wild flowers.
○To show how to put up a tent near a stream.
○To share the joys of the trip with her grandfather.
○To suggest some plans for the trip.
○To ask her grandfather to reply to her.

一瞬、日本の高校入試でもありそうな読解問題だなあと思って読み始めたが、やはり違っている。正解は、「○To share the joys of the trip with her grandfather.」。discourse 全体をglobalに読み取って、意図を解釈しないとできない。

日本の外国語の読解問題の場合、書かれてあることが、そのまま問われるような問題が多い。そうでないものもでてきてはいるが、まだまだ表面的で形式的な理解を問うものが多数だろう。場合によっては、

Keiko bwenested the car.

(question)Who bwenested the car?
(answer) Keiko did.

のように、bwenestedという単語の意味が分からなくても、正解になってしまう。（注　存在しない架空の語です）このようなことが起こってしまう。

果たして、外国語教育では、どこまで求めるべきなのか。僕は、この小学校２年生レベル（むしろ、それ以上）の読みを要求すべきだと思う。決して難解な英語を駆使しなくても、内容自体の知的レベルをあげることは可能なはずです。皆さんはどう思われますか？
